DESK REVIEW | 07.03.05. About the training for members of the health and long-term care workforce, are there other professionals that receive dementia training?

It is not common. Some other professionals may wish to pursue dementia training if they wish, or if it is a workplace policy. In such cases, the training would be offered possibly by associations or private services.

Psychologists and therapists are covered under 07.03.02.

For other professionals such as receptionists and security guards, dementia information sessions and short-term workshops are provided to some of them under the campaigns of dementia friendly city. For more details, please refer Part 5. Yet, these trainings are not comparable to the professional training received by the long-term care workforce.

The training efforts for the health workforce do not seem coordinated at national level. On the website of the Directorate General for Health Services, workshops and training on relevant skills for dementia care, such as screening and management of condition are mentioned. However, these training sessions are based on a single hospital and are initiated by specific doctors/hospitals or NGOs.

Despite requests made to the Mental Health Unit at the Ministry of Health and Wellness as well as to the Medical Association of Jamaica, no data has been sourced.

See response under 07.03.03. It is unclear from desk review whether any dementia-training is incorporated in training programmes, curricula, etc.
